Recently the website autismspeaks.org was brought to my attention. On the surface it seems like a website designed to help and raise money for people with autism. However, the organization approaches Autism in a way that is offensive to nearly every autistic person who sees it. They treat it like a disease, something that cripples you and dooms you to failure. They stand behind theories that were proven false years ago, and have proposed a screening for autism at/pre birth, which could lead to abortions of autistics, many of whome could become great people.
One of the ways that Autistics have been trying to get their point across is by creating parody sites of autismspeaks. Recently a young autistic child (14 or so I believe) was threatened with legal action from Autism Speaks, seeking $90,000 in damages. Not only was the website completely legal, but the move was completely underhanded. In the end they made her give up the website, through nothing more than a group of lawyers bullying a child.
This link sums the story up pretty well, likely better than I have.
[link] In the end, I suppose I just want everyone to realize that people with autism and related conditions are not lesser people. They should not looked down upon or pitied, even though websites like Autism Speaks would have you believe so. If you don't believe me, go find an autism forum. Find the threads where they are talking about Autism Speaks, and see what they say. You will find nothing positive about the way they work.
You know, if the people you claim to be trying to help has nothing but bad things to say about you, maybe you should re-evaluate your claims, or try changing your approach. Just a thought.
Anyway, that's my rant for today. Let me know your thoughts on this.
